Unite to restore democracy: Fakhrul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday called on all opposition political parties to unite to restore democratic rule in the country.

He said that the Awami League had infringed voting rights of the people after dropping the provision for caretaker system and through rigging a national election.

Earlier Ziaur Rahman restored democracy in the country and his wife our party chairperson Khaleda Zia introduced caretaker system, Fakhrul said.

He was addressing an online discussion organised by Bangladesh Nationalist Research and Communisation marking International Democracy Day.

BNRC coordinator, former member of parliament and BNP leader Zahir Uddin Swapon conducted the programme.

Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, a BNP standing committee member, said that Awami League had destroyed the democratic system in the country and AL leaders and activists became corrupt.

Another standing committee member Moudud Ahmed said that AL had violated the democratic rights of people.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD president ASM Abdur Rob said that Awami League had destroyed all institutions of the country.

Socialist Party of Bangladesh general secretary Khalequzzaman said that without mass movement it would not be possible to end the misrule of Awami League.

Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna called on all opposition political parties to wage movements against the failures of the government.

BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury demanded the release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

Jatiya Party faction president Mostafa Jamal Haider said people would soon take to the streets to oust the Awami League government.
